The Pasadena Playhouse District is one of Pasadena's most
engaging centers for art, literature and entertainment. Anchored by the renowned Pasadena
Playhouse, a National Historic Landmark that was declared the State Theatre
of California in 1937, this district offers and eclectic mix of bookstores,
antique and specialty shops, restaurants and historic architecture. The
Pasadena Playhouse's College of Theatre Arts, known during the 1930s, '40s
and '50s as "Hollywood's talent factory," launched the careers of
countless playwrights and actors including Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman.
The theater presents more than 300 performances annually.
The Pacific Asia Museum, on the National Register
of Historic Places, is also located in this district and celebrates the arts
and customs of Asian and Pacific culture.
